In total the canal measures 77km from Atlantic to Pacific. Building was started in 1904 and completed in 1914. The successful time round that was, the french had tried before but after almost 22.000 workers died (from diseases mostly) they had thrown in the towel.
In those days, about 1000 ships passed through the canal each year. Nowadays that is 15.000!
To pass a ship pays anything from about $500,- for a private yaugt, to $500.000,- for the big container ships.
At 40 ships a day, I would like a Panama Canal for my next birthday please...
