The canal is 33m wide. The ships measure 32m... They couldn't possibly navigate through by themselves so they are pulled by these little locomotives. For the big boys they use 8; 4 to pull, 4 to break. With literally only 50cm between ship and wall, it's amazing the ships never touch the walls. Well, almost never judging by some scratches.
They are building a new set of locks to accommodate bigger ships. It will be 49m wide and 366m long.
Now many ships are build to the exact dimensions of the canal, these are called panamax ships. The bigger ones are called post-panamax.
